The legendary Orpheous "Justo" Faison established the Mixtape Awards in 1995. The Mixtape Awards is the first national awards ceremony for DJs created to bring recognition to the most influential DJs and Artists throughout the world. In hopes of continuing Justo's legacy, The Mixtape Awards will enforce Justo's vision by permanently naming each award "The Justo" and enforcing a voting process as shown below.
The Mixtape Awards opens its website to all registered users to nominate DJs, Artists, Recordings and Executives eligible for “The Justo” during the year. Only one ballot per IP Address is counted. (This process does not apply to Special Categories* and The Street Album*).
An independent committee of experts knowledgeable about Music, DJs and Mixtapes recommend their top five candidates in each category, except Special Categories and The Street Album of the Year. Individual committee members vote privately and anonymously, unbeknownst to one another. Ballots are then submitted to a third party accounting firm to authenticate each ballot.
The purpose of screening is to ensure that each entry is eligible and placed in the proper category.
Multiple committee members may remove a particular candidate from their individual ballots confirming the candidate was not justified for the particular category.
Multiple committee members may add a particular candidate to their individual ballots thereby confirming the candidate was grossly overlooked in a particular category.
Only the majority of the committee can affect a candidates position.
The Mixtape Awards’ website is once again open to vote for your favorite DJ, Artist or Executive through our online ballot. Committee members vote via a secret ballot. Online ballots as well as committee ballots are combined and tabulated in secrecy by an independent accounting firm.
For the following categories, the Mixtape Top Executive & Lifetime Achievement Award, the Mixtape Legends Award, the Mixtape Pioneer Award, and the Pink House Award. Candidates and honorees are determined by the special categories committee (not to be confused with the voting committee). This committee is comprised of members of The Mixtape Awards staff, industry experts and trusted advisors.
The Street Album of the Year category is comprised of actual CD submissions where a separate committee listens to every entry. The committee is comprised of music professionals, listeners and consumers that rate each entry during multiple listening sessions until a top ten is populated. The top ten is then posted online for the public to listen and vote for the best submission. The artist that receives the most votes online is revealed as the winner at the Mixtape Awards ceremony.
